There are lots of ways to bust your budget when planning a wedding, and a multi-tiered cake is no exception. Wedding cakes are traditionally tiered and well decorated. They do, of course, sit right next to the head table and become a focal point during the reception. The cake cutting and feeding is usually positioned around the first dance and most of your guests’ eyes will be on you two and the cake at this point of the festivities. So, it is important to have a beautiful cake to adorn the cake table that will not only capture your guests’ attention but will also serve as a great backdrop for the all important cake cutting pictures. For this reason, you will probably spend lots of time and money getting just the right cake for your wedding. However, when money becomes an issue and when you are trying to stick to a certain budget, the wedding cake, in all its glory, can really put a dent into your plans and your pocketbook. Recently, we have seen a resurgence of what was once a staple at weddings…the fake cake. Yes, fake!!! It looks real, it feels real but it is just a mock up of a wedding cake designed only for show. The real cake is a sheet cake that makes its appearance only as pre cut pieces served to the guests after dinner. Why oh why, you ask, would one stoop to a fake cake? I’ll tell you why….money!!! It will save you a bundle and no one will ever know. Here are a couple of tips to pulling off the fake cake trick:
- Rental – ask your baker if they have display cakes for rent. They would bake the sheet cake that will be served at the wedding but the display cake will be the one the guests will see you pretend to cut. These cakes usually have a hidden compartment in them where a piece of real cake will be placed for you and your spouse to feed each other during the pictures.
- DIY – You can easily create a great looking fake cake yourself. Just visit your local craft store and purchase two or three styrofoam circles. Use some plaster to “ice” the creation. Adorn it with some ribbons and flowers and voila! Instant fake cake. You can even cut this for the pictures. Just remember to have a real piece of cake behind this one so you can use to feed each other during the pictures.
Having a fake cake doesn’t have to cramp your style. You can find some pretty cool looking rentals out there. Or, create a DIY cake that is really eye catching. For many reasons, people are choosing to go this route. Many for financial reasons and others because they want the full on wedding cake but don’t have the guest list to substantiate something so large. This way, they get the look they want but they don’t have to deal with tons of leftovers afterwards because their real cake is big enough to feed only their guests. No waste is a cool thing… Yeah! Green wins again.

This is actually a great idea! Another great way to save money is to scope out the locals. When I was planning my wedding I found a woman who made wedding cakes right out of her house. The cake she made was beautiful, delicious, and only $250!
